    1. Systems and method for resolving ambiguity

Techniques are provided for resolving ambiguity in natural language speech. Speech is recognized using automatic speech recognition. A theory of discourse analysis is determined and at least one set of candidate discourse functions is determined based on the theory of discourse analysis. Prosodic features in the speech and a correlation between the prosodic features and the discourse functions is determined. The sets of candidate discourse functions are ranked based on the prosodic features in the speech information and a correlation to the prosodic features expected for the determined discourse functions. Ambiguity is resolved between sets of candidate discourse functions based ...

    2. Semantic analysis system for interpreting linguistic structures output by a natural language linguistic analysis system

The present invention is a system and method for performing semantic analysis that interprets a linguistic structure output by a natural language linguistic analysis system. The semantic analysis system converts the linguistic output by the natural language linguistic analysis system into a data structure model referred to as a semantic discourse representation structure (SemDRS).

    3. Intelligent portal engine

A human-computer interface system and methods for providing intelligent, adaptive, multimodal interaction with users while accomplishing tasks on their behalf in some particular domain or combination of domains. Specifically, this system accepts user input via natural language text, mouse actions, human speech, whistles, gestures, pedal movements, facial or postural changes, and conveys results via natural language text, automatically-generated speech, and displays of graphs, tables, animation, video, and mechanical and chemical effectors that convey heat, tactile sensation, taste and smell.

    4. System and method for teaching writing using microanalysis of text

A technique for teaching expository writing using a system that provides an objective reader centric microanalysis of the information a writer has conveyed to a virtual reader. The technique uses a theory of discourse analysis such as the Linguistic Discourse Model. Using the technique, a text is segmented into discrete units of meaning of the selected theoretic model. Student analysis and understanding are facilitated by the assignment of types to the discrete units of meaning and by linking the discrete units of meaning into a discourse tree under the constraints imposed by the selected theory. A virtual, or objective, reader ...

    5. System and method for writing analysis using the linguistic discourse model

A technique for writing analysis using the theory of discourse that categorizes text into content, operator and modifier text building units and provides for relating the categorized text building units together using coordination, subordination and binary relationships. A graphical representation of the discourse can be shown since the structural representation of discourse created by the interrelationships can be easily displayed. The analysis and graphical visualization of the writing structure of texts helps writers to analyze and compare writings.

    6. Dynamically delivering, displaying document content as encapsulated within plurality of capsule overviews with topic stamp

A method and system for the dynamic presentation of the contents of a plurality of documents on a display is disclosed. The method and system comprises receiving a plurality of documents and providing a plurality of topically rich capsule overviews corresponding to the plurality of documents. Each capsule overview is a representation of the core content of the corresponding document. The method and system also includes displaying each of the plurality of capsule overviews and dynamically delivering document content encapsulated in the plurality of capsule overviews.

    7. Method and apparatus for hierarchically decomposed bot scripts

Method and apparatus are disclosed for the development and implementation of virtual robot's (bot's) directed natural language interaction with computer users. Bots employing the present invention base natural language interaction on a predefined universe of discourse that is decomposed hierarchically into domains. A data structure provides a storage area for each domain. The data structure may reflect the hierarchical decomposition. Domain topics containing program code directing the bot's interaction are placed in domain storage areas. Pattern lists associate words expected to be "heard" by the bot with particular domain topics. Domain topics are provided, as appropriate, to ...

    8. Method For Dynamically Delivering Contents Encapsulated With Capsule Overviews Corresonding To The Plurality Of Documents, Resolving Co-Referentiality Related To Frequency Within Document, Determining Topic Stamps For Each Document Segments

A method for the dynamic presentation of the contents of a plurality of documents on a display is disclosed. The method comprises receiving a plurality of documents and providing a plurality of topically rich capsule overviews corresponding to the plurality of documents. The method also includes dynamically delivering document content encapsulated in the plurality of capsule overviews. In so doing, the method in accordance with the present invention can present thematic capsule overviews of the documents to users. The capsule overviews, delivered in a variety of dynamic presentation modes, allow the user to quickly get a sense of what a ...

    10. Automatically recognizing the discourse structure of a body of text

The present invention is directed to recognizing a discourse structure of a body of text. In a preferred embodiment, a discourse structure recognition facility utilizes syntactic information associated with the body of text to generate a discourse structure tree that characterizes the discourse structure of the body of text. The facility first identifies in the body of text a number of clauses. The facility then determines, for each distinct pair of clauses, which of a number of possible discourse relations should be hypothesized between the pair of clauses, based on the syntactic structure and semantic of the body of text ...

    11. Methods for controlling the generation of speech from text representing one or more names

Improved automated synthesis of human audible speech from text is disclosed. Performance enhancement of the underlying text comprehensibility is obtained through prosodic treatment of the synthesized material, improved speaking rate treatment, and improved methods of spelling words or terms for the system user. Prosodic shaping of text sequences appropriate for the discourse in large groupings of text segments, with prosodic boundaries developed to indicate conceptual units within the text groupings, is implemented in a preferred embodiment.

    12. System with collaborative interface agent

The present invention relates to a discourse manager which permits effective collaboration between a user and a computer agent. The system operates according to a theory of collaborative discourse between humans, with the computer agent playing the same role as a human collaborator. The present invention does not concern the internal operation of a particular agent, but relates rather to the structures for managing a collaborative discourse between any type of agent and the user. The discourse manager includes a memory in which application-specific recipes are stored and a memory in which the discourse state is stored. Each recipe specifies ...

    13. Dialogue-sound processing apparatus and method

A dialogue-sound processing appratus of the present invention generates discourse structure representing the flow of dialogue from fragmentary spoken utterances. In the dialogue-sound processing apparatus, the speech fragments of the dialogue-sound is inputted through a sound input section. A clue extraction section extracts clue which is a word or prosodic feature representing flow of dialogue from the speech fragments. An utterance function rule memory section memorizes utterance function rule which is correspondence relation between the clue and the utterance function representing pragmatic effect for the flow of dialogue. An utterance function extraction section assigns the utterance function to the clue ...
