  2. About Canada

Canada is the second largest country in the world by total area, covering most of northern North America. It is bounded to the east, west and north by the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic oceans, respectively, and to the south and northwest by the United States of America.

These lands have been inhabited for millennia by aboriginal peoples. The French started to settle and colonize the area early in the 16th century, followed later by the British. After losing the Seven Years War, in 1763 France ceded nearly all its colonies in North America, leaving England in control of that part that would become Canada. Canadian Confederation created the present polity in 1867, with three colonies of British North America uniting to form four provinces. From 1870 to 1949, the remaining colonies and territories of British North America joined and enlarged Canada. Full independence of Canada from the United Kingdom was gained stepwise and completed with the Canada Act 1982, which severed the last vestiges of dependence on the British parliament.

Canadian government follows the Westminster System — a parliamentary democracy with a constitutional monarchy — recognizing Queen Elizabeth II as its official head of state. A federation comprising ten provinces and three territories, Canada is a bilingual and multicultural country, with both English and French as official languages at the federal level. A technologically advanced and industrialized nation, Canada maintains a diversified economy that is heavily reliant upon its abundant natural resources and upon trade—particularly with the United States, with which Canada has had a long and complex relationship."
